Parents of puppies (and dogs), have many new hats to wear: potty trainer, chew toy distributor, night time cuddler, and treat dispenser.

Now, dog trainers are telling you that you must do this crazy thing called socialisation, too?

If you are like many pet parents, you likely don’t have time to set up play dates for Fluffy just so that she can be accepted into the top tier of doggy friends at the dog park.

And, when Fluffy grows up to be Fluff… the time to continue such play-time antics seems, well, even harder.

Listed below are a few tips for socialising your pet, while maintaining your busy lifestyle.

Run Errands with your Dog

If you have to make a quick trip to a hardware store, pet store, bank, or to pick up a life-saving quadruple shot espresso drink, consider taking your pup with you.

A surprising number of stores allow well-behaved pets, but make sure to call ahead before you strut into the store with your mutt.

Taking your dog out for quick trips in the car to a new environment with a variety of people is also a great way to socialise your pup.

Bring Fido (.com) have a comprehensive list of dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, parks, beaches and activities around the world. See Australia’s awesome listing here.

Bring your Puppy to Happy Hour

So a dog walks into a bar….

But really, did you know that many bars and restaurants allow pets on outdoor patios?

Bringing your dog along to grab a quick drink helps your puppy learn the proper way to behave around people.

In addition, having a cute puppy under your arm at the bar is a much better conversation starter than asking, “do you come here often?”

Madpaws.com.au have a great list of dog friendly Pubs right here in Australia.

So, what are you waiting for?

Join a Dog Walking Group

On Saturday mornings you will likely be walking your puppy anyway, so why not join a dog walking group and make new friends?

Inquire with a local dog training facility, pet store, or animal shelter if any dog walking groups meet in your area.

Being exposed to a pack of new dogs and humans helps your dog learn to avoid territorial and protective tendencies.

Who knows… your puppy may even meet a new best friend that you can schedule puppy play dates with!

Use your Pet as a Reason to Explore

Have you been meaning to check out that new park or nature reserve in your town but haven’t had a chance to yet?

Sometimes the best way to get out the door is to remind yourself that you’re doing it for your dog, And, if you’re anything like me, you probably already have a cheeky sign on your desk that reads…

“I work so that my dog can have a better life”.

Knock those places off of your bucket list by introducing your pup to all the must-see sights in your area.

Dogadventures.com.au is a great site showing all the great hiking trails around Australia that your dog is welcome to roam. (by your trusty side that is)!

Drop your Puppy off at Daycare

Still struggling to find time in your day to take care of all your puppy’s needs?

Consider dropping your puppy off at daycare, which is just as adorable as it sounds.

Dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds play together under the close supervision of a dog trainer, which provides extremely important socialization opportunities.

Some Doggy Day Care facilities even offer a Pet Taxis ‘Pick-up & Drop-off’ service if you’re really strapped for time, like Bloomingtails Dog Grooming and Doggy Daycare – in the leafy suburb of Sydney’s very own Lane Cove.

As an added bonus, when you pick your dog up at the end of the day she/he will be utterly exhausted.

Hire a Dog Walker

Another great option for pet parents on a tight schedule is to hire a dog walker.

Not only will this expose your pet to new people and routes around town, but many dog walkers walk in groups, giving your pet ample opportunity to socialize with other pups.

With a little bit of creativity, socializing your pet does not have to be a time-consuming endeavor.

By integrating your puppy into your daily routine or hiring someone else to help get the job done, you can ensure your puppy grows up into a well-rounded, well-behaved dog.

Pup Update – 1-2 Years

Puppy socialisation has been such an important part of Jerry’s education. Like so many, Karun and I both work full-time, therefore we didn’t want Jerry to spend too much time on his own. It was hard on occasion to arrive home late to our energiser puppy, rearing to go at the mere sight of his parents. Feeling all but exhausted, at times it was hard to find the energy for more than a tummy rub, let alone a romp in the park or a game of throw (and maybe retrieve) in the back yard. When my Parents-in-Law lived with us, we had built in Doggy Care (OMG weren’t we spoilt), but when they left to go home, day care was an imperative. As a puppy (and an only fur-child) Jerry truly needed the stimulation of other dogs and humans. He has learnt far better manners from these relationships than he ever could have being taught at home, and I am grateful to all those wonderfully dedicated Dog Walkers, Nannies and the like who have shared in his growth. One lucky pup, two lucky parents!
